Hi, I'm Kim.
I was inspired to set up The SpaceCraft after working with a group of older people at a day centre in East London.
An older woman there called Dawn knitted my baby daughter a beautiful pair of booties when she was born.
Many people admired them, asked where they were from and were often disappointed when I said they were a one-off, handknitted by a woman I know.
When I went to Dawn to thank her, she said ‘oh I love it, I just wish I had more people to knit for’. And that really got me thinking.
Dawn had told me how lonely she can sometimes feel, how much she valued getting out her house and how much pleasure she got from sharing her knitting. I knew how good she was at it, and how many people would enjoy it too. And I thought that these people should be connected.
I also knew that Dawn was by no means alone. I have been working with groups of people at risk of social isolation for 10 years and hear many stories about people’s struggle to know how to connect to their community and feeling at a loss about what they can offer others. And I want to imagine a different future for people, especially as I know I’m not alone in hearing these stories.
And as a keen crafter I believe that craft provides positive ways to build self-esteem, connect people to others, and provide a sense of purpose – improving mental and social wellbeing.
I know the benefits that crafting for others has brought me and Dawn, and many others too.
And so The SpaceCraft was born. We bring groups of local people together through free and inclusive community craft projects, bringing people’s skills to life, celebrating them and enabling them to share them with others. For more details about what we do, please see our Projects page and our Products.
Thank you, and we hope you enjoy what we’re doing x
